Birth Certificates Part of Birth Records

Most countries throughout the world record the birth of a child with a birth certificate that is a part of birth records. These certificates are issued soon after the birth and now are an essential part of a birth, and are essential as per law.  Since they are part of birth records, these birth certificates work as proof of identity for that child and are useful in many ways.  They prove to be extremely important when joining colleges, when applying for passports, when applying for jobs and many other places.

The birth records of a person contain a lot of information about the individual, such as the name of the child, the child’s gender, exact time of birth, place of birth, parents’ names, parents’ ages, addresses and a registration number.  These records are kept with the government office concerned.  Usually people keep a copy of the birth certificate with them as they know it would be needed for a whole lot of things.

This certificate is not something huge or complicated.  It is just a small form with all the above given details of the child and the parents, along with the signatures of the people present, such as the doctor of the midwife, along with the details of the hospital where the birth took place.  Although, the government tries to make this information as secure as possible with some delicate patterning etc, it is not a huge problem for people who want to forge the details. There are many people who do that but eventually government has ways of finding out what’s happening and nailing down the person.

There are two types of certificates that are given; a short certificate the shows only the name of the child, surname, gender, date of birth and the place of birth.  A full certificate is also similar but with more information, including the father’s name, his occupation, his place of birth, mother’s name, her place of birth, her maiden name, and a whole lot of other relevant information pertaining to the parents of the child.  Usually parents keep complete records of their child’s birth and have the full birth certificates with them.  If they have lost the certificate, they can always apply for one.  Even the child, once he grows up can get his own birth records.

Once these records are created, it becomes very difficult to change the details, even for the birth record holder.  You may be allowed to add things to the certificate but the original details will not be allowed to change.  A surname cannot be altered at any cost, unless some error is being corrected.  A new forename can be added if it is done within twelve months after the child’s birth.  The reason they do this is to ensure accuracy of the birth records.  Otherwise, no one would have an accurate birth record, if they were allowed to make any changes they wish to.  These restrictions are imposed on birth records because they are part of the vital public records, which hold a lot of relevance in every aspect of the person’s life, right from the childhood to adulthood.
